In conversation with artist relations director, Haley Miller, on her journey into live event operations & helping people.

The most beautiful part of the work we do is the community that we’ve created.

Driven by a mission to take care of people, artist relations director, Haley Miller, commits herself to creating experiences that build community for both the people enjoying and producing the show.

Beginning at electronic music promotions company Insomniac Events as a harm reduction volunteer when the Insomniac produced a festival in her hometown of Rockdale, Texas Haley worked her way up through the company, eventually establishing the artist relations department at Insomniac before independently founding her artist relations operations business, aptly named, Hal Mill, LLC.

Over the past five years Haley has directed artist relations operations for over 80 large-scale productions. Her business is built around her personal and professional values and the relationships that she nurtures.

A master of working in high pressure environments and going above and beyond the scope of work, Haley puts respect and human dignity at the core of her operations.

Define The Industry Standard

“I was seeing this as a time (mid 2010’s) of the extreme inflation and downright boom of the electronic music industry. I was thinking maybe I can help set this precedent for how we should be operating shows with these artists or how we should be setting security standards backstage with these artists…. In my mind I’m thinking we’re setting the standard….. I saw it as an opportunity to do better and be better for bigger productions and it wasn’t a secret that we were throwing some of the biggest shows in the country. I just wanted to be the best. Maybe I wasn’t sometimes but I always learned something and I still do. I will always learn something from every single show that I’m working on and my goal going into every show is to always be better. …

Practice Acceptance & Uphold Human Dignity

I go into my life and my work by viewing everyone as essentially equal and ensuring that we treat them all the same.

My biggest thing is always giving people the benefit of the doubt. Some people call me insane and naive for thinking this but I really try to trust everyone until they prove me wrong…I find it very blissful to think no one’s out to get me. I genuinely have a deep trust in people until proven wrong At the end of the day all we have is the people around us.

The Team & The Community

I understand the importance of every single position when leading a team. I was a volunteer and I know how important I was. I know I saved lives when working for $0 an hour and driving across the country. Every single position is so imperative to an operation especially of festivals of such a large scale. Realizing how important those small roles are made me not only want to work harder towards the bigger roles but made me appreciative and grateful to be having an impact, no matter what I was doing.”

To me the most beautiful part is the community that we’ve created…. That’s the most rewarding out of everything we do is the community of people we have in our lives now.”

The Necessity of Challenges & Feedback In Order to Reach Your Potential

On transitioning from working in-house at Insomniac Events to founding her artist relations operations business:

“In that last year when I was full time with Insomniac I was getting a little stagnant thinking I know what I’m doing rather than learning how much more I could be doing that was right and being able to implement what I was learning with new people. It was incredible and it was a huge wake up call I so desperately needed to get to my full potential. I saw every challenge as this awesome opportunity to learn.”

I think feedback is the only way we can grow and move forward because you can self-reflect all day long but if you’re not that good at reading yourself it doesn’t really matter so we also have to value the opinions and feedback that other people give.

Believe in Yourself

On moving from Texas to Los Angeles to pursue her career in live event production:

“Having one person that you really respect say ‘I think that you should do it’ it really outweighs the 200 people you have moderate respect for saying ‘Don’t do it. You’re crazy.’ My parents were furious with me. They couldn’t believe it… At the time I had little to no support but when you know you just know.

In conversation with Geoff Shames on building Crowd Control Digital Marketing & Creative Agency and a culture of fun.

This is fun. This is my hobby, my joy.

Geoff Shames, Co-Founder of Crowd Control shares his journey through the music business from record label founder to promoter to talent agency marketer before establishing his 12th venture – Crowd Control Digital.

Each pivot has been driven by excitement to explore opportunity. His all or nothing commitment, thrill in the pursuit of solutions, and love of playing the game by his own rules make Geoff’s career in digital marketing and creative strategy synonymous with fun.

The Game

On the impact of the pandemic on Crowd Control:

“It’s been an exercise in the need to pivot. That’s something I’ve had to learn over the years. When a wall pops up in front of you how do you get around the wall? Do you climb the wall? Do you bust through the wall? Do you dig a hole? Whatever makes the most sense…. We’ve pulled off the pivot. It’s been surreal to look back and say we’ve pulled it off. We’re extremely lucky.”

All or Nothing

“I’ve always wanted to do something. It’s definitely changed. I’ve done one too many things over the years but that’s because I get excited about things…. I don’t regret anything that I’ve done. It’s all been fun. It’s all been exciting.”

The act of doing it is fun to me. I like the game really. I’ve always had that mindset. Every time I’ve decided to do something or try something it was because at the time that is what I wanted to do and I wanted to give it a try. If you’d asked me during that time period for each one of them that’s what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I was going to put 150% into it and I was going to retire on that. That’s changed over time but it’s been all or nothing for everything.

Playing By Your Own Rules

“I was never great at traditional school. The reason for that is I didn’t like the structure. I didn’t like playing by the rules. I didn’t like having to do the homework because somebody said so if I could just take the final and pass it. It didn’t make sense to me to follow these steps if there’s a shorter way to get from “A” to “B”. I had that mindset of “I’ll just figure it out”. I know where I am, I know where I want to be. I’m just going to figure out how I get there my way does not lend itself well to school but it does lend itself well to what I’m doing these days.”

At every level of business in any sector everybody is just trying to figure it out and that’s fun. There is no structure. The business itself is more like music, it’s free flowing.”

Fun At The Core

“People are following on social because they want to experience the journey and you as a person. Opening those doors as oppose to just being a source of news is genuinely more interesting. At the core of everything we do we’re trying to be fun and add value and make it exciting – hoping that whoever’s on the other side enjoys it and it adds a little smile to their day. That simple moment is the end goal.”

“It’s been a while ride. It’s been really exciting. It’s the only thing I think about. It’s what I do for fun. It’s what I do for work. It’s literally all I do…. I could be on vacation and I’m still working. It’s because it’s not work. It’s literally fun.”

Fall 2020 Digital Launch

With a vision of empowering local artists and using visual art as a medium to inspire empathy, understanding, and awareness the Windows of Expression Exhibition at the Hollywood Palladium features the original works of fourteen Los Angeles artists.

Given a 4’ x 5’ panel, the same size as the concert posters that typically fill the windows of the Hollywood Palladium, the artists shared their perspective on equality and social justice. Through reflection, bravery, and belief in the power of creative expression to stimulate change fourteen diverse pieces of art were conceived.

The exhibition will launch at the beginning 2021 in the Hollywood Palladium’s windows along Sunset Blvd.

The Windows of Expression exhibition reflects the current moment in time and encourages a mediation on a progressive tomorrow we must choose to build next.

As a call to action, voter registration resources provided by the non-partisan organization, Head Count, encourage viewers to raise their voice through civic engagement as election season nears. Self-Awareness

“You need to analyze yourself instead of analyzing other people”

I don’t think this is me. I need to get out of here.”

“I perform the best when my back is against a wall.”

“Music has always played a big role in my life as long as I can remember”

Prevention

“With the entertainers you have to understand that what they need to focus on is their art so the last thing they need to worry about is their security. Our job is to make their life as normal as possible.”

Resilience

“When I first started the business I didn’t have a client for two months. No income was coming and I had to be creative… You start to think about what can you do. I always have to use my brain and figure out a way out of any type of situation. Even if you’re in a bad neighborhood or your size is mismatched with a big guy. You either talk your way out of it or your come up with a plan. I can get myself out of any hole.”

Belief in Self

“I have always had that mentality that I can do anything anyone else can do.”

“Anything you do you need to have the utmost confidence in yourself and the way to get that confidence is to recognize what you need to improve.”

Equality

“When I got into the private sector I started finding out my male colleagues were making more money than me. That’s when I started thinking I need to take things into my own hands and start my own company. I wanted that equality and I wasn’t given that.”

We invite you to enter the Kingdom of Mind

Be transported inside the Kingdom in this visual experience with video game engine graphics.

Using Epic Game’s Unreal Engine the Kingdom of Mind was visualized. With two worlds modeled in the game engine, audiences were transported from the ordinary world, as seen in a forest setting, into the Kingdom of Mind.

The Six Elements of the Kingdom

Featured within the Kingdom of Mind are six unique elements – Cosmic, the Journey, the Fortress, the Stage, the Glue, and the Core. Each element holds a significance in describing the pillars of the KOM vision as well as the elements of a concert.

The six elements of the Kingdom - Cosmic, the Journey, the Fortress, the Stage, the Glue, and the Core.

The Power of the Live Experience

Moving through a live music experience can feel like temporarily entering a new world. This world presents experiences and choices – who will you share these moments with? Where will you watch the show? How will you contribute to this community that is coming together around an appreciation for music?

A great show can provide hope, an escape out of day to day life – towards the light and discovery. Kingdom of Mind’s purpose is to produce these uplifting moments of experience and connection.

We invite you to enter the Kingdom of Mind. Can you spot each element?

The journey begins with you.
